Why the Brooks Ghost 18 Stands Out

The Ghost line is famous for being the "go-to" shoe that does everything well. The 18 takes that reputation further with a newly redesigned upper and an even plusher step-in feel. (If you want a sock-like, ultra-premium plush ride rather than a standard daily trainer, check out our Brooks Glycerin Stealthfit 22 Review).

Key Features & Benefits

  • Lightweight & Dynamic Cushioning: Powered by nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 foam for a soft, responsive ride, plus a brand-new Ortholite X-60 sockliner for plush step-in comfort from the very first run.
  • Secure, Breathable Fit: The redesigned upper features a flexible flat knit tongue and triple jacquard engineered mesh, offering advanced breathability and a supportive fit that locks your foot in place.
  • Modern Design & Protection: Two-tone engineered air mesh provides a stylish look and increased airflow, while the smooth, flat-knit tongue delivers pillow-like protection for the top of your foot.
  • 🏆 Doctor Approved & Enhanced Visibility: Recognized with the APMA Seal of Acceptance and PDAC A5500 Diabetic certification. Plus, 3M reflectivity on the heel ensures increased safety during low-light runs.

Premium Materials & Build Quality

Brooks has fine-tuned the Ghost 18 to provide a durable, comfortable, and sustainable ride for high-mileage everyday use.

⭐ Upper: Triple Jacquard & Flat Knit Mesh
The modernized mesh provides a balance of structure and flexibility. It adapts to your foot's natural shape while maintaining durable reinforcement to prevent wear and tear over hundreds of miles.

⭐ Midsole: DNA LOFT v3 + Ortholite X-60
A winning combination. The nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 provides lightweight, long-lasting underfoot softness, while the premium Ortholite X-60 sockliner adds an extra layer of plush, moisture-wicking comfort right against your foot.

⭐ Outsole: RoadTack Rubber (Recycled Silica)
Made with recycled silica, this lightweight rubber compound provides sustainable traction, reliable grip on asphalt, and excellent rebound without adding unnecessary weight to the shoe.

Our Experience & Tips

After logging hundreds of miles in the Brooks Ghost 18 on roads, paved trails, and treadmills, a few things stood out immediately. First, the DNA LOFT v3 cushioning is a massive upgrade from older models. It is plush, luxurious, and absorbs the shock of hard pavement like a sponge, yet it doesn't feel mushy or unstable. Second, the 3D Fit Print upper provides a secure, structured lockdown without any annoying seams that cause blisters. Our biggest tip: if you are coming from older Ghost models, the 18th version is slightly wider through the midfoot. For most people, this is a welcome change that allows for natural toe splay, but if you have very narrow feet, you might need to cinch the laces tighter than usual.

Compared to the Nike Pegasus, the Ghost 18 feels much more protective and less bouncy. It is a pure daily workhorse that asks nothing of your legs. It handles slow, easy recovery runs beautifully, and the durable rubber outsole laughs at high mileage. It is also highly accommodating for custom orthotics, thanks to the removable, thick foam insole.

What to Consider Before Buying

Before you buy, consider what you want out of your daily run. The Brooks Ghost 18 is a comfort cruiser, not a speed demon. It is relatively heavy and the foam is soft, meaning it is not the best choice for tempo runs, track intervals, or race day. If you want a shoe that feels fast and propulsive, look at a carbon-plated racer or a lighter trainer. Also, keep in mind that the heel counter is quite rigid. While this provides excellent stability, some runners find it creates friction on the Achilles tendon during the first few runs. Finally, while the shoe is technically neutral, the wide base and structured heel make it a safe, stable option for mild overpronators who hate the feel of stiff stability posts.
